Guiding Question: What s
Biomimicry and how does it relate to design?
Situation
The
consideration of nature in the design of products is becoming very important in
product design. The inspiration of nature (shapes, size, structure and
textures) is helping our world to become more ecological in both design and
manufacture. Biomimicry is the study of nature as a way to inspire creative
ideas for the design of products. By studying biomimicry we can not only learn
about our connection to the world around us but also help move toward Sustainability
and Eco Design. This will help us to
leave a smaller ecological footprint for the generations that will follow us
and give them the chance to enjoy the diversity of our biology that our world
provides.
Situation
specific
Many
people need products that help them in their life at home. A manufacturer is
considering introducing a range of eco-friendly biomimicry products to increase their range of designed products.
As an eco-designer, the owner wants to produce a range of projects that
highlight nature. For example its patterns, shapes and structures. A lot of
market research is showing that these type of products are becoming even more
popular for people to buy.
This
product will need to be aimed at a particular market or age group. A range of
prototype products have been commissioned and must be of a generally small
size. (No larger than 500 x 300 x 300mm). It must also be made primarily out of
sustainable material. You are to
design and create a solution that follows these guidelines and be of high
quality.
